Hoovervilles and Mexican Americans
Hoovervilles began to pop up all over the country. They were named after President Hoover and were intended to help the homeless. People shared the chores, and the food. The houses were small tents built on a wooden platform. Each Hooverville could house about 300 families. Garbage began to become food for the homeless. But the homeless were thankful for this temporary home.
Mexican Americans were born American or only American citizens. When the depression started, many Mexican Americans were deported back to Mexico, even if they were born in America. Some Mexican Americans just went up and left and applied for a citizenship in Mexico, to try to escape the economic downturn. The Mexican Americans that stayed were discriminated against.
